Step 1 – Random (or semi-random shapes)

The first step in this tutorial is to block out bold shapes. for this, you will want a big solid brush. We don’t want any small shapes at this stage. Doing a few shapes parallel to each other will also l help to develop several ideas at one time.

It is also a good idea to experiment with hard edges and soft edges, simple strokes like these will really help define characters.

Step 2 – Simple facial features

Now we are on to the fun bit, Look at these shapes you have just created, what do you see? For my first monster (top left) I saw a jelly bean so I replicated the same shape for the mouth then I added some short arms and legs and stuck some horns on top.

For the bottom left monster, I wanted to also stick with the same shape for its mouth but have the eyes poking out the top to break the straight lines.

For the two remaining monsters, I decided to look to the animal kingdom for a source of inspiration. of course, we have a rabbit and an octopus.

Step 3 – Refining the lines

Now that we have our basic character sketches done, it’s time to refine the lines and add smaller details. The smaller details include things like toenails, claws, teeth, and small bumps on the skin. This type of small detail is great for adding character but is also a great tool for creating contrast or breaking up symmetry.

Step 4 – Adding colour

The final stage is adding colour. You can let your imagination go wild at this stage as there are no defined colours for monsters. for these illustrations, I have a solid colour that is used for the main shape and any smaller details have been done in a slightly lighter or darker variant of the main colour.

Here are a few body parts or features that you could consider adding to your monsters.
